How to choose the right sealant - acetoxy vs neutral silicone sealant

Saint-Gobain Weber Hong-Kong

Silicone sealants can be used to bond various common materials, including plastic, metal, tiles and glass. There are two types of sealant: acetoxy and neutral silicone.

Acetoxy silicone release acetic acid while curing. It would cause various problems when used on certain substrates, such as discolorations on natural stone, corrosion on metals and bituminous surfaces. Acetoxy sealant is used for the area where faster curing and saving cost is required.

On the other hand, a Neutral silicone sealant does not release acidic substance while curing.  With low odour, it is safer for the worker to apply, especially in indoor areas. They have greater adhesive properties for most of the material surfaces. When applying the sealant to sensitive surfaces, it is recommended using a neutral sealant over acetoxy sealant as they will not react to most of the materials, which provide better adhesion and weatherproofing attributes.
